Dental disease is the most overlooked diseased in pets and can lead to serious health complications for your pet - yet, it's entirely preventable.
Bacteria associated with periodontal disease can enter the bloodstream and infect the heart, kidneys, and liver. This is why I continually emphasize with our ABC Vet family the importance of an annual dental exam and cleaning.
“How goes the mouth, so goes the health,” said Dr. Bert Dodd, clinical professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. “Overall health can be affected by oral disease, which can get into the blood stream and affect the animal’s internal organs and joints.”
Dental cleaning is well worth the cost.
Taking care of your pet's teeth can prevent other health problems, saving you a lot of money over the long term.
Why does your pet need a veterinary dental cleaning?
Your pet needs a professional dental exam and cleaning because this is the only way to remove tartar from the teeth and under the gum tissue to protect your pet's health. Also, it's essential that we get radiographs (X-rays) of your pet's teeth. Your pets aren't able to tell us when they have dental disease and dogs often don't show that they're in pain. A radiograph is the only way for us to see below the gumline what dental problems your pet may have. Cleaning a dog's teeth without radiographs would result in missed opportunities to improve your dogs quality of life and health.
