The Foundation for Animal Care and Education (FACE), a San Diego not-for-profit charity that provides financial assistance for life-saving veterinary care, celebrated its 500th animal saved. Penny, the Chi-weenie (Chihuahua-dachshund mix) was attacked by a venomous snake and was suffering from a deep open wound on her neck. In order to save her life, she needed surgery to repair the wound and remove the necrotic tissue. Penny’s owners were devastated at the thought of losing her, and feared they would have to give her up to save her. The family of five has been struggling ever since their home and business burned down in the San Diego wildfires. They couldn’t bear the thought of losing Penny, too. Luckily, Penny’s story has a happy ending. ABC Veterinary Hospital in San Marcos told Penny’s family about the FACE Foundation. FACE was able to cover the unexpected costs of Penny’s emergency care, and she is now back at home with her family. Penny’s grateful owner, Salina, wept as she thanked ABC and FACE, “I don’t think everyone knows about FACE, and everyone should.” FACE is proud to have saved 500 lives, and will continue to serve as a supportive center where local families can receive help to avoid the tragedy of the “economic euthanasia” of their beloved animal companions. FACE relies solely on donations, and would not be able to operate without the support and generosity of the community. All of us who have felt the unconditional love of an animal know how difficult it can be when we are faced with their medical challenges. At the core of FACE is an unwavering dedication to prevent unnecessary heartbreak and loss of life for families and pets in our community.

Established in 2006, The Foundation for Animal Care and Education partners with local veterinary hospitals to enhance and preserve the quality of life of animals by providing access to necessary medical care. FACE provides financial grants to pet owners who are unable to cover the cost of their pet’s emergency or critical care.
